Located north of Fort Bragg (near the tiny town of Cleone,) the Tenmile Dunes are just about the grooviest place in the whole wide world. Extensive dune complexes are rare on the Northern California Coast, and this is one of the largest. The dunes are adjacent to Inglenook Fen, the only undeveloped fen on the California Coast. A fen is similar to a bog, only much more biologically active. The dunes and fen together comprise a unique natural community, with many endemic plants and insects. The dune-fen complex has long been a center of much debate, with conflicts between advocates of development, public access, and preservation of natural values.
