Big River has been in the news a lot lately, at least the local Mendocino Coast news. The river and its watershed have been owned by various timber companies for as long as Europeans have been living in the area. The current owners are interested in selling, and a major campaign has succeeded in raising the funds to buy the land, protect it from future logging, and make it a state park.
The park will span over 7,000 acres, including the largest undeveloped estuary in California, salmon spawning grounds, large wetlands, habitat for many threatened species, and many miles of hiking trails.
